Ur MUDHere I will try to go over the basics of starting a new character in Ur MUD. This guide will take you over the first stages of the game and leave off with you sitting at a market with some essential supplies. When you first join the game type "who" in the instruction bar and see if there is anyone online to help you. You shall start out sitting at a tent with nothing but your fists for protection. Your first order of business should be to look around. You do this by simply typing “look” in the instruction bar. When the text appears you will want to look for 3 items; a well, a tree, and a merchant. The well and merchant should be right next to you. Also, remember to check the distance to them. Lets take a walk over to the well. In this demonstration, it will be to the east. So type in the letter “e” (or “s”, “w”, or “n” to walk in the correct direction) and keep doing this until you arrive at the well. When you get there, you might be a bit thirsty from the walk, so lets take a drink. Type “drink well” and you will take a nice drink of water. Now its time to go towards our second objective, the tree. Once again you should use the “look” command and find the closest tree. Walk over to the tree (as described earlier) and look at what it contains. To look at the contents of the tree you need to use a new command, “look in tree”. I hope that you will find some apples and a branch or 2 on the tree. You are probably hungry by now, so why not eat an apple? Simply type in “take apple tree” followed by “eat apple” and you have gotten a nice meal into your belly. Now you have 2 hands so lets make use of them. A branch sells for more than a apple so you should grab 2 branches (if the tree has them). You take a branch in much the same way as an apple, “take branch tree”. Type that a second time and head over to the nearest merchant. Once you arrive you should sell your branches, “sell branch” twice. Now purchase a basket with the “buy basket” command once you have gathered enough money (may take many trips) and be on your way. You can also look for stones and reeds on the ground, but they only show up when using the "look" command. You should make a stop at the nearest well after selling your items and get a drink of water. When you get back to a tree eat an apple and place another one in your basket for later with this command, “put apple basket”. You must first pick the apple as described earlier and have it in your hand to place it in the basket. Now using your current knowledge fill the basket with branches as well as one more in your open hand. Use apples if the tree runs out of branches. Keep this up until you can purchase a knife from a merchant. Once you have a knife you are ready to hunt your first sheep. Now it is time to tackle your first sheep (make sure its a white one!). Get ready to watch the screen and react quickly, this wont be easy. Get your knife ready and find and walk to a near by sheep using the methods described above. When close to the sheep type in "track sheep" so you can see where it moves to and then type in "stab sheep" to attack it. After you strike your first hit the sheep will run away from you. Watch the text and quickly move after it. Attack the sheep whenever you are on the same tile as it. I recommend copying the attack text to your clipboard so you can quickly insert it into the game when you catch up to the sheep. Do not give up, just keep striking it until it is killed. Once you have killed the sheep pick it up with, “take corps” and carry it to the nearest merchant (you might not be able to carry the entire sheep, if not follow the instructions below for dividing it and take the pieces to the merchant in a few trips). Here you will want to skin the sheep, “take wool corpse” and sell it, “sell wool” to the merchant. You may wish to keep one portion of wool to place on your body for protection rather than selling it. After all the wool is gone (checked by “look in corpse”) sell the sheep to the merchant as well. To do this take your knife and "butcher sheep" to remove the meat from it. you should be able to butcher it 3 times before a message appears that the corpse is empty. Now you are ready to face the world! Use the “list” command to look at what else the merchant has to offer. Be sure to purchase a tunic and upgrading your basket to a device that does not need to be carried in your hands. I would also recommend a waterskin before traveling very far from a water source. Don't forget that you can hunt other animals as well as sheep, but they might not be worth much or fight back against you! This includes black sheep. You have a long way to go, but remember these 3 facts and you will be fine. 1. Run out of water and you will die. 2. Run out of food and you will die. 3. At all times, HAVE FUN! Good Luck ~Wild1234 |
