Introduction
You
are a worker in Mr. Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory.Mr. Wonka has asked you to help him create a new
chocolate candy.You don't know
anything about where chocolate comes from or how it is made. You
will need to do some research first before you present your ideas for
the new candy to Mr. Wonka. You
will use this WebQuest to gather information and write 2 short
letters: one to Mr. Wonka on your research on chocolate, and another
letter to pursuade him to make a new candy using one of your ideas.Your
informative letter will include such things as, where chocolate comes
from, what it looks like, how it is made, and other important
information. The second letter will be to
convince him you have a great new idea for a chocolate candy and that
he should consider manufacturing it.Then
using your knowledge you will make a list of new ideas for Mr.
Wonka's new chocolate candy.You
will then select your favorite idea and make a poster advertising
your new candy.
The Task
Your
final product should consist of:
- An
informative letter (where it comes from and how it is made must be
included).
- A
persuasive letter (convincing him to make your candy).
- A
list of new chocolate products to be included with your
letter.
- An
advertisement for the best chocolate product from your list

The
Process
- Begin
by looking at some of the websites and taking notes on the
information you find there.
- Arrange
your notes by history, where it comes from, how it is made, and
any other main heading you can think of.
- Have
at least 3-5 facts about 3 different chocolate related
topics.
- Write
your first letter to Mr. Wonka that informs him of how much you
know about chocolate. Have your first paragraph
as an introduction, and the second paragraph as a history of
chocolate. The third paragraph of
your letter should tell where chocolate comes from, and the fourth
paragraph should speak of how chocolate is made. Make
sure you have a topic sentence and a closing statement in your
informative letter.
- Write
your second letter to Mr. Wonka that will persuade him to support
your new candy idea. Speak to him of your new
knowledge of chocolate, write down some of your ideas, and
convince him that your new candy will be a success. This
letter must also have a topic sentence and a closing
statement.
- Pick
the best one of your ideas and design a poster advertising your
new candy.
- Turn
in all of your letters and ideas to Mr. Wonka (Mrs. Rubisch) for
grading.

To
score well on this project you will need to have 2 letters and a
poster.The informative letter
will be graded based on the information in each of the 3 main
paragraphs.You will also be
judged on spelling, grammar, and punctuation.I
will be looking for a topic sentence and concluding statement in your
letter.The persuasive letter
will be graded based on how well you are able to convince Mr. Wonka
to support the creation of your new candy.I
will be looking for facts about chocolate to be inserted throughout
the letter.I will be looking for the use of
transition words in your writing, as well as grading grammar,
spelling, and punctuation.Your persuasive letter must also
have a topic sentence and concluding statement.
Conclusion
By completing
this WebQuest, students will be able to write and informative letter,
a persuasive letter, and design a poster with an original
product. This also can easily be tied into different novels at
different grade levels, such as the Chocolate Touch or
