Introduction

Because of your reputation for hard work, and your desire to learn, you have been invited to join an Antarctic expedition. You will be "navigating" the "Internet Ocean" along your trip of discovery. As you continue on your trip you will be responsible for taking notes on what you see and learn. When you return you will be asked to share pictures and information with the public.


The Task

  •  Print out  two graphic organizers
  •  Fill out organizers using information from websites listed in Resources..
  •  Use a multimedia program such as KidsPix or Hyperstudio to write two paragraphs about penguins.
  •  Illustrate your paragraphs with a picture of a penguin.

The Process

            1.  Print out Penguin Worksheet #1.

            2.  Print out  Penguin Worksheet #2.

            3.  Go to Ask Jeeve for Kids Search Engine and type in the following question: "Where can I hear what
                 a penguin sounds like?" Click on the link which answers this question. Listen to the penguin.

            4.  Go to the Terraquest Penguin Page.
                 Use the information on this page and the penguin links to fill out the graphic organizers.

            5.  Go to the Zoom Penguin Page.
                 Look for additional facts about penguins on this page.


Assessment /Grading Rubric

4 = Student has visited both penguin websites. Both worksheets are filled in neatly and completely with appropriate and accurate facts. Final project includes two informative and accurate paragraphs about penguins. The illustration is colorful and neat.

3 = Student has visited both penguin websites. Both worksheets are close to being completed. Most facts are appropriate and accurate. The final project includes some information about penguins. Information is accurate. The illustration is colorful and neat.

2 = Student has visited both penguin websites. Worksheets are partially completed. The final project includes a small amount of information. The illustration is colorful and neat.

1 = Student has visited penguin websites. Little has been done on the worksheets. The final project includes little accurate information. The illustration may be incomplete.


Conclusion

By taking this internet trip to Antarctica you have furthered your knowledge of penguins and shared it with others. Try another trip on your own to learn more about the other Antarctic animals.
