Congratulations to our Voice of Democracy winners! April Odom won 1st place in our Post, and 1st place in the District, and Lauren Megginson won 2nd place in our Post. We're really proud of our young people!
The controversy surrounding the World War I Monument in front of the courthouse in Grove Hill is continuing. Just to fill you in, the monument was changed from the original format, black names on one side, white on the other, to all the names on one side. However, the biggest questions are ; who authorized it? Why was it done without the full county commissioners vote, who paid for it, was the Historical Society contacted, and did they authorize any changes? After the County Commissioners on March 26, we STILL have no answers, and even more questions. At the meeting, after District Commander Luther Parden had noted the errors on the new stone (flags wrong, names mispelled, shoddy workmanship, wrong type of stone), a representitive from the NAACP spoke, but he didn't seem concerned that the monument had been wrongly changed, all he spoke about was a racial thing. THIS MONUMENT IS NOT ABOUT RACE!!!!! When it was erected in 1924, the nation was segrated. Right or wrong, that is our history, and I don't think ANY race has a right to alter history. This situation is continuing and we'll try to keep you informed.
There will be a fish fry Saturday, April 7 from 11am to 2pm at the Post. Tickets are available from any member. Tickets are $6.00. You KNOW they'll be good, our own "Chef Luther" will again be at the cookers.
The District 10 meeting will be in Selma on April 29 at 2pm. This will be election of officers, so please try to attend. Post 5106 meeting will be April 30, 7pm. Officers were elected at the March meeting, and the Installation will be held in May. The Ladies Auxiliary was unable to complete their election, due to the absence of the Treasurer. These elections will be completed April 30.
