    Olympics Ice Hockey Tournament

TFIIHF is proud to present Olympics Ice Hockey Tournament.

Olympics is the most coveted international Ice Hockey trophy. It will be presented on a 4 year basis. TFIIHF is working with IOC and TFNHL in order to bring the most exciting and competitive tournament possible. The first TFIIHF's sponsored Olympics Ice Hockey Tournament will take place in February 2002. TFIIHF has made tentative arrangements with TFNHL, so that TFNHL's season would be paused for a couple of weeks in order for the World's best players to attend the Olympics Tournament. The following Olympics Ice Hockey Tournament will take place in 2006, 2010, and etc. The site of each tournament will be determined by the IOC.

The next Olympics Ice Hockey Tournament will be played in Salt Lake City, US in February of 2002. The full schedule of events will be announced in the near future.

Olympics Ice Hockey Tournament 2002 will be played on a different system in comparison to every Olympics Ice Hockey Tournament in the future. All seven team will play round robin tournament. The highest point getter will receive a first round  playoff bye. Team getting the 2nd place will play team which would finished 7th, #3 will play #6 and # 4 will  play #5 in a single elimination game. The winners than will advance to the medal round, where they would be joined with the #1 seeded team. The Finals will be a best out of three series.

However, in the future, the previous Olympic Gold Medal winning team will receive first round bye, thus making the round robin tournament a 6 team event, with top three advancing to meet the last Olympics winner in the medal round.

All players which were born in a particular nation are eligible to participate on their respective national teams. However, IOC and TFIIHF  prohibit players to play for more than one team in their career. Thus, if a player will switch his citizenship, he will be forbidden to play for any other nation except his birth country. Notable exemption is Sweden, where the national law demands a person to give up his or her citizenship if they receive any other, meaning to say that those Swedish players who apply and receive citizenship from any  other country will be ineligible to play for both, Sweden and their new homeland.

Olympics Ice Hockey Tournament 2002 is still a couple of years away. TFIIHF will continue working with IOC and TFNHL in order to make the tournament is good as possible.
