Union Cup Tournament. |
TFIIHF is proud to present European Union Cup Tournament.
EU Cup will soon become one of the most prestigious international
trophies. The EU Cup will replace the old Good Will Games tournament.
It will be entirely played in Europe, mostly hosted by the EU member
countries, so that the ice hockey is promoted in places besides the
traditional hotbeds
The European Union Cup will be presented on a 4 year basis. The Inaugural
EU Cup will take place in August of 2003. The following EU Cup tournaments
will take place in 2007, 2011, and etc. The site of the tournament
will be determined by the TFIIHF on a rotating basis between European
Union member-nations. The Inaugural EU Cup will be hosted by England
and France, with Medal Round played either in London or Paris, which
will be determined later.
EU Cup 2003 will be played on a similar system as Canada Cup tournament.
All seven team will play round-robin tournament. The four team with
highest points total will advance to the medal round. Team #1 will
play team #4, team #2 playing #3, with winners advancing to the Medal
Round.
All players which were born in a particular nation are eligible to
participate on their respective national teams. However, EU Cup prohibits
players to play for more than one team in their career. Thus, if a
player will switch his citizenship, he will be forbidden to play for
any other nation except his birth country. Notable exemption is Sweden,
where the national law demands a person to give up his or her citizenship
if they receive any other, meaning to say that those Swedish players
who apply and receive citizenship from any other country will be ineligible
to play for both, Sweden and their new homeland. Moreover, unlike
World Cup and Canada Cups, all players who participate in the EU Cup
tournament swill not be prohibited from playing in the Olympics.
TFIIHF will keep you updates on the events relevant to European Union
Cup 2003 in the future. Please come back for any updates.
