Punalu'u - "Black Sand Beach"

Green Sand Beach

Ka Lae

South Coastline

Green Sand Beach is a one hour drive from Volcanoes National Park. Along the way we'll stop at the very scenic Punalu'u Black Sand Beach. Here the early whaling ships stopped for fresh water at the adjacent ponds. The beach is noted for it's large Green Turtle population and nesting grounds. We also pass through Naalehu, the Southernmost city in the US, where Mark Twain planted a Monkeypod tree during his famous visit to the island.

Arriving at the South Point Road we begin a 10 mile downhill ride making our way to "Ka Lae", the place that many believe was where the first Hawaiians set foot on the island after their long journey from Tahiti. See the Information Page for more about the early Hawaiians. The views from the road of the coastline are spectacular. Along the way we'll pass the "Windfarm". This collection of giant wind generators supplies a pollution free source of electrical power to the island.

Arriving at "Ka Lae" we'll tour the ruins and the surrounding high cliffs we'll begin our ride to Green Sand Beach. This path follows the coastline where you may see whales off-shore. It's a well packed sandy road and provides for easy biking. An hour later you'll arrive at Green Sand Beach and hike down to this olivine rich sand which gives it the green coloration. A rare geological feature. We hike down a trail cut out of the lava cliffs by ancient Hawaiians to the beach. Bring your swimsuit for a dip in the warm Pacific waters.

It's 2.5 miles back to the van for your return trip to your point of origin having experienced one of the most unique areas on the Big Island.
