MICHAEL SHANKS |
Dr. Daniel Jackson
A professor of linguistics and a Doctor of anthropology with focus on ancient Egyptian history, culture, and language. He went with the first mission to Abydos where he fell in love with and married Sha're. He is a civilian member of SG-1, under command of Colonel Jack O'Neill.
Dr. Jackson was brought onto the Stargate team of researchers by Catherine Langford. When Daniel provided the key to deciphering the "hieroglyphics" on the inner ring of the Stargate, and told General West that he could likewise decipher the similar symbols on the Abydos gate and so joined Colonel O'Neill's team in going through the Stargate. Daniel remained behind on Abydos with his new family - Sha're; her brother Skaara; and their father Kasuf - while the rest returned to Earth and reported that the Abydos Stargate had been destroyed.
A year after the rest of the team went through the Stargate back to Earth, Colonel O'Neill returned with another team, asking Daniel to come with them to provide information on new aliens menacing Earth who had come through the Stargate. Daniel went with the people from Earth; shortly after, the Gou'ald came through the gate and kidnapped Skaara(Daniel's brother in law) and Sha're. Daniel promised to return to Abydos in a year, and joined SG-1 to try and find his wife and brother-in-law.
As a result of childhood traumas, such as seeing his parents killed, Daniel experiences hodophobia and latent acrophobia. His fear of heights has so far only caused him problems one time while SG-1 was on active assignment. By taking antihistamines, he is able to minimise the sneezing and sinus problems that manifest as a result of his dislike of travel.
O'Neill has given Daniel the nickname 'SpaceMonkey' for
obvious reasons. After Sha're's death Daniel was going to quit the SGC but has stayed on
to search for Ammonet (the Goa'uld inside Sha're) and Appophis' child. Daniel Jackson's birthday
in on the 8th of June and he loves Chocolate Walnut Cookies.
Michael Garrett Shanks
In an article, "Guardian at the Gate", in the December 1997 issue of Starlog magazine, Michael described his character, "Daniel is a dreamer, an idealist. He has a boyish curiosity and a love of humanity and life. He's driven to search out the best in people, and he has a very romantic viewpoint when it comes to history, life, love and people. He's a consummate optimist. He's surrounded by military people, so he looks like a pacifist."
Michael was born on December 15th, 1970 in Vancouver, Cananda. He seems to posses those qualities which make his character Daniel Jackson so sweet and he delivers a new view of the anthropologist from the original Stargate movie. While studying business at a Vancouver college, Shanks observed a production shoot for an episode of "MacGyver." He was intrigued with acting and he spent a year in theater part-time until he decided to study arts and was accepted into the fine arts program at the University of British Columbia from which he graduated in 1994.
Michael Shanks has performed in many theatre productions at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, including some lead roles.
He has beautiful blue eyes and sandy brown hair. He's height is 6'0" and he is right handed. Michael's favourite television show is the Simpsons . The actor who inspires him now is Ed Harris and William Hurt.
