Towns
I'm glad to tell you that Diablo II will not have just have a single town to go back and forward to like in Diablo. In fact Diablo II will introduce four new towns in which we will meet many new townsfolk; although a couple of the old characters from Diablo will make an appearance namely Wirt and Cain the Elder who you will find in the now burnt out shell Tristram.

Thankfully interaction with the townsfolk will be much more than was the case in Diablo and the townsfolk will also be much more animated than they were in Diablo, meaning that you wont see Gris standing with his arms folded occasionally dropping them to his side. In diablo II we are promised more ambience; townsfolk busying themselves with their daily chores, even chickens pecking at scraps on the ground which should make the voyages through the towns looking for equipment much more pleasant and bearable. Townsfolk will even be seen initiating conversations with your character and when receiving an item or quest reward you will be handed it, as you'd expect rather than it being begrudgingly thrown to the ground as in Diablo. On occasions townsfolk will become involved in quests accompanying you down to the depths to fight by your side (for a fee of course), this adds quite a nice touch to the game and although the townsfolk may have their own objectives in joining you, it will still be helpful to have a helping hand to complete quests etc, especially in single player.

As well as being able to meet and talk to some of the NPCs in the towns, you will also be able to enter their structures (and maybe have a cup of tea if your really lucky!), which adds a bit more realism to the game. Many NPCs refuse to talk with you until you have completed a subquest (which can at times be quite annoying), some you will need to fight in order to win their respect (which you couldn't do in Diablo) and it will be your responsibility to protect and defend the ones you manage to hire. If anyone you have hired dies you could be in a lot of trouble.

Trading with NPCs is very similar to the trading in the original Diablo. When you are going to trade with someone, a box will pop up on the left of the screen, displaying graphics of all the items they have for sale at that time. Hovering your mouse over them will reveal the price and known attributes of the item. You can activate your right inventory and drag and drop any items you wish to purchase or sell with the money being deducted or added to your purse automatically.
