1975 GL1000 Project

On September 2004, I have purchased a 1975 GL1000 with the intention of using it as a parts bike for a future low-rider type of ride similar to the Wicked Wings.
This bike, which has over 85,000 miles, is in running order but is in very rough shape. It has been kept outside unprotected from rain, etc.
After mentioning this to members on the Classic Wings SIG, I was rather surprised by their responses. Apparently, since this is the first edition of all Goldwings, it deserves to be saved. It is a "classic".
I previously though that the shape of the bike was too bad to even think of cleaning it up. I am not so sure anymore. I will start stripping it and, after examining different portions of the bike, will be able to see clearer. Everything is there.

Expense Log:

A list of expenses as the project advances.

Condition as Purchased

IMHO this GL1000 would look much better "naked". The windscreen and the saddlebags must definitely go.

Both "hinges" are broken off the left side cover.

These saddlebags and the trailer hitch must go. IMHO it would look much better without these items.

The windscreen will be removed. It takes away from the "clean" look.

The complete head light assembly should be replaced (pitted and rusted).

Seals on the front forks must be replaced. The right fork is gashed (needs aluminum welding to repair).

The front wheel has been gashed by a tire iron.

The front fender needs to be straightened.

Both calipers locked: rebuild calipers.

Oil Filter Info

The Goldwing Info Site calls for part number 15411-371-000. However the dealer gave me part number 15410-426-010 which is listed for the GL1100. I hesitated, but it fits.
Note: I have found the following info on the net. The 422 was the old filter for the SOHC fours, etc. When the CBXs came out, the too used that filter, until Honda realized it required more flow. Thus cam the 426, which is now the only filter Honda carries.

At Randakk's Cycle Shakk, it is mentioned that the Fram filter number is CH 6009.

J.C.Whitney shows part number ZX012737U.Note: The same part number is listed for all models of GLs (1000, 1100, 1200). I have noticed this elsewhere also.

At the Motorcycle Oil Filter Cross Reference page, the following are also listed: Purolator ML16809, WIX 24940.
The dimensions for these are: Height 2.205, OD 3.028, ID 0.772.

Van Leeuwen Enterprise carries Emgo oil filter (10-37500). the VL part number is 61-2620.

I have found the following on a Kawasaki Ninja 250 site:
You can find the following oil filters, which are a direct replacement for the Kawasaki unit sold by dealers. Most are around half the price of the Kawasaki filter:

Amsoil: SMF 101
CarQuest: CFI-89941
Emgo: 10-37500
Fram: CH6012 of CH6009
Hastings: LF571
Honda: 15410-426-010 or 15410-300-024
Kawasaki: 16099-003
K&N: KN-401
NAPA: 4941
Perf-Form: J-501
Purolator: ML16812
STP: SMO-12 or SMO-09
Triumph: 1210031
Yamaha: 36Y-13441-00

At least one of these filters will be available at any reasonable auto parts store, such as AutoZone, Pep Boys, Schucks/Kragen, NAPA, WalMart, etc. If you can't find these brands at your favorite auto parts store, check to see if they have a cross-reference chart for the brand of filters they carry -- most filter manufacturers do. Cross-reference their brand to one of those filters listed above.

Nov 9th, 2004: Compression Test

Notes:
The throttle was held open to ensure obtaining a good reading.
The valves have not been adjusted. After valve adjustment, will do this again.
