Harley Davidson chrome rear shock covers

On the VRCC tech board, it was once mentioned that Harley davidson chrome rear shock covers could be used as an alternative oil filter cover.

The part number at J&P Cycles is 7000095.

The price is right ($17.99 for the pair).

I like to use WIX oil filters (51358). As you can see in the picture, the chrome shock cover should fit nicely over the filter..

I have chosen not to use the clamp which is furnished with the shock cover.

Note that there is space between the cover and the filter.

Electrical tape will be used to fill out this empty space.

A few layers of tape (less than ten: I didn't count) should do the trick. Click to view full size image
If you check as the tape is being layered onto the filter, it is easy to get a snug fit. Click to view full size image
Screw the oil filter onto the motor as usual. Click to view full size image

Slip the shock cover over the oil filter. It now fits snuggly.

Note:

I have ridden all of summer 2003 with this set up. The cover has never loosened, etc.

Note: These do not fit over the above WIX oil filter. I suspect that the Honda OEM oil filter may be required to use these.

Inexpensive Oil Filter Cover

Just wanted to let you folks know about a great oil filter cover I found the other day. Of all places - Wal Mart. I do not have a camera as yet so I will do my best. In the section of Wal Mart that has the plates, forks and spoons you will find assorted types of salt and pepper shackers. The brand name is "Good Cook". It is made of highly polished stainless steel. The lable is green and white. The item number is 33663. It is a perfect fit over the Honda oil filter. The best feature - $2.97. I have had one on my Tourer about 1 month. Looks great. If you can't locate one at your local Wal Mart drop me a line and I will see what I can do. The store in my area has plenty.

Re: Inexpensive Oil Filter Cover

Another is the chrome center piece from a auto wheel. About 3 bucks. Put in two sided tape and you got it.

Re: Inexpensive Oil Filter Cover

Another happy salt shaker owner! #33663 pepper and #33662 salt work great. Some of those shakers at WalMart have a ridge around the bottom. Makes it look like a tin can. Watch which ones you pick up. They must have a couple different manufactures.
Great idea. Thanks again. I got 4 !

Re: Waaaaaaaaaah!!!

The Walmart pepper shaker fits the Fram 6017A filter (also sold at Walmart) perfectly-- Don't even need any sticky tape.
