Service ProjectsPart of the Cub Scout promise is "To Help Other People" Pack 614 is sponsored by Murrieta Rotary, and we share their philosophy of "Cheerful Service". Scouts from our Pack have taken part in, and are planning, a number of projects to benefit their community:
Scouting for Food for St. Martha's Food BankFrom September through December of 1999, our Scouts helped St. Martha's Food Bank by donating countless food items and volunteer hours to keep the hungry of our community fed during the holidays. The pantry serves the Murrieta area, feeding between 300 and 400 people each week. You can continue to help St. Martha's food bank. Many of us can afford to pick up one or two extra items when we go to the grocery store. Scouts can canvas their neighbors, collecting the cans and jars that collect dust in the dark corners of nearly everyone's pantry. We'll have the Scouting for Food barrel at each of our Pack meetings, and deliver your contributions for you. Let's help these people out. They're our neighbors, the kids our sons and daughters play with. The following are suggestions for items that will be most useful, but they will accept anything you are willing to donate.
If you'd like to deliver your donations personally, the food bank is located at: 39445 Los Alamos Road Goodwill, Good TurnIn August, 1999, and again in January, 2000, the California Inland Empire Council, Boy Scouts of America, collected used household goods to benefit Goodwill industries. Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Venturer units and Explorers distributed bags through their neighborhoods, and returned a week later to collect the donated materials. Our distict, Tahquitz, delivered over two and one half times the donations collected by the rest of the council! Our contributions made up nearly three fourths of all the contributions from the seven districts in our council. Teneja Falls Trail Cleanup18 Scouts, leaders and family of Pack 614 trekked out to the Celeveland National Forest early on the morning of April 15th to remove trash from the trail leading to the Teneja Falls. In all, over 50 pounds of trash, mostly recyclable, was taken from the forest and disposed of properly. We would like to thank Sue Zahn of the National Forest Service for helping us coordinate this activity! Mojave National Reserve Conservation Project
This will be a two day project, giving boys a chance to put in two nights of camping. Some exploration of the park is also planned. Mojave has a diverse population of plants and animals, including endangered tortises, as well as being rich in its geology, with a number of extinct volcanic sites and a complex of caverns. It should provide numberous opportunities for the boys to earn advancement towards activity pins.
Scouts Build Organ Donor AwarenessAs part of earning their Organ Donor Awareness patch, Scouts from Pack 614 will be distributing literature provided by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) during May and June. Their goal is to help build organ donor awareness among the residents of the Murrieta Valley.
