What is The Matrix? This was the question and also the website www.whatisthematrix.com that the movie The Matrix tried to answer. The Matrix is described as the world placed in front of us to prevent us from seeing the truth, "...that we are slaves..." to an AI created system where humans are grown to be converted into fuel. The movie takes on the notions that what we see, the way we think, and who we are come from a computer simulated world known as The Matrix.

The basis for the movie's content comes from Jean Baudrillard's book "Simulacra and Simulations" where Baudrillard explores the idea of what is Real and Hyperreal. How do we know what is Real when our world consist of so many simulated / fake creations?

The movie itself is a visually stuning colouge of new movie technology, Japanese Anime, Martial Arts, kick-ass action & suspence, and an amazing story. However, like the movie says, "No one can be told what the Matrix is. You must experience it for yourself."

Reason for Importance

The Matrix is important to all those interested in AI and simulation and to all those who fear being overtaken by technology. It is like the Frankenstein of AI. The Matrix shows us a reality where machines are control.
