A medical student decides that life after death not only exist, but can be explored without actually dying. To test his theory, he convinces four other medical students to assist him in his experiment by temporarly shutting down his heart and brain (flatlining) then being revived to tell the tale. After their apparent success, the remaining students to give it try but for longer intervals until they realize that their success came with some final challenges.

Reason for Importance

The inside booklet for the Flatliners DVD notes that the writer, Peter Filardi, was inpired by a friend's near death experience. In fact we hear and have heard many stories regarding people seeing God or some form of afterlife after mistaking being classified as dead or even just before it was apparent that they would die. However, Flatliners is not about what happens when we die. It is about the level of knowledge that one should try to find. In this case we see that trying to know too much could either drive you insane or even get you killed. In other words, "If there is anything we're supposed to learn about it, it will be revealed when we die." (Director - Joel Schumacher)
