I have heard some refer to Dark City as the original The Matrix
but that is not quite accurate. It is similar to The Matrix in that
we learn of a world created by something other than God / a god / gods or
human beings. However, we also learn that our use as humans are for some experiment
at learning how we tick and what makes us who we are. In fact we learn that we
are nothing but a collection of memories: that everything up until each moment
of our lives is created from a series of past memories.
Reason for Importance
Dark City is important for anyone questioning reality, anyone into
idealism or existialism, and even to those who are realist. I would image that
the directors/writers read some Berkeley or Leibniz when creating this movie
because their ideas are very prominent in the movie.
