Illusions of Deception

Storyline

Illusions of Deception is a CRPG parody series developed by Theo Chakkapark, Matak, and David Schmidt. Taking place in the year 2017, the story begins with four happy-go-round characters, Theo, David, Ben, and Zeala. Induced with having a good time, the four fail to realize that their planet is in peril... a meteor crashes, seperating the four to different parts of the planet. Meanwhile, this gives Darius, the head of a powerful manufacturing company, Zairetech, a chance to take over the world...

Join the main character, Theo, as he tries to find his missing friends, in a mixed up storyline filled with humor, romance, food (and lots of it), and power... ok, it's just food and humor.

History

IOD first started when RanmaGuy (RG from now on) wrote a 6 page essay in 7th grade about what would the future be like in 20 years (1997 was when the essay was assigned). The essay itself did not follow the same concept or storyline of the IOD today; however, it did have a few elements of the game, such as the meteor crashing. Another change was in the essay, David was actually head of ZaireTech, and he was a human who got speical powers from the meteor (which supposedly crashed near him), in which he turned into a cyborg. There was a crystal involved in the story (now pendants in IOD), which gave unlimited energy (aka fusion energy).

After the essay was written, months later, RG signed onto AOL, where he learned about the KNP fourms; one of the games there, Sword of Cobalt, was a big inspiration that started RG to do an RPG of IOD in KNP. SoC's unique Final Fantasy style battle engine convinced him that he could do his own RPG that resembled Final Fantasy.

As the years passed, more characters and ideas were introduced. Anime influences (ie Ranma 1/2 and Slayers) contributed to a small love theme in the plotline, not to mention an out of the ordinary RPG, which pokes fun at other RPGs through dialog and quests.

There were several versions and variations of IOD before the storyline and characters was finalized.

The First IOD

This IOD was the most different of IODs ever; it was an early prototype that involved around 5 characters (additions were the character Josh and Zeala was named Erin). The characters were piloting in a spacecraft, when it gets hit by a meteor, sending it down to some unknown land. After the crash, Josh becomes a trator and tries to kill off Theo in a battle, where David interferes and saves him from Josh. All characters were all originally drawn by RG(which really was crappy). This game was first realeased on the AOL KNP fourms before the fourms went down.

Theo had red hair, a red shirt, and blue pants. His weapon was a rifle, and used lightning attacks. To tell the truth, Theo was supposed to be physically modeled after Chrono of Chrono Trigger.

David had black hair, a black vest, along with shades. Kind of a James Bond look, I guess. Also, in the storyline, he wasn't insane at all, but still used explosives for weapons.

The Second IOD

Also known as IOD Zero, this IOD version was basically a scrapped project. The same character drawings were used in this version like the 1st IOD, but the character Josh didn't exist, and Erin's character was changed to Aerith. The villain Darius was introduced, but David wasn't 'hypnotized' under his command; in fact, they never even got to meet Darius. More of a play-through game, than interaction, IOD Zero barely let the character control characters; there were 1, 2, and 3 character battles, none that resemble the IOD we know today.

IOD Orignial Series

This IOD was the IOD that we first realeased to the public with much success. Although it was never really finished, it helped form the basis (in storyline and characters) of IOD. This was also one of the 1st Final Fantasy-style RPGs ever realeased in KnP, which offered a 1-3 character battle engine for other KNPers to look at and take apart for their own games. The project was scrapped due to event limitations in KNP, not to mention that people didn't like the ripped Final Fantasy graphics.

IOD Playable Source

This IOD was actually a remake of IODe2, which was never finished. Made in MMF, this IODe2 source featured a scrolling world map, original graphics (thanks to Matak), working menus, and a 1/2 complete load/save function. However, this project was ceased because Matak said that he had better plans in mind for the characters, not to mention that the new source chracters and backgrounds were time consuming to draw.

IOD Remake Series

With better storyline and graphics in mind, along with something to give the klik community something different and new, SE has decided to work on the IOD RM series, which is totally different from the series mentioned above. Most of the story elements have been changed and new characters are being introduced. Bigger characters, which resemble a Saga Frontier art-style give players to better view the characters and their expressions. For the storyline, IOD is focused around a central theme of what it means to live and why life is important for the central characters and to others.

The Future of IOD

Who knows what we have in store for IOD? There are several plans on what to do in the future, such as an animated series, manga, etc. Proposals to program IOD in C++ and sell it on a CD has come up, but we cannot confirm if this will happen or not. For now, we want it to be as big as it can be. Although it'll never rival a great RPG series such as Final Fantasy, we want the IOD universe to be as well known. Our main goal right now is to set up a large fan base and get IOD RM out as soon as possible.
