"When learning to face the path at your pace, every choice is worth your while" Watershed

Those of you who know me know that I am obsessed with the Indigo Girls. When they sing, I often feel as if I could have written the lyrics myself. They are indeed "Intimate Strangers" to me. One of the most spectacular moments of my life was attending their concert in December of 1999. Although I could barely see them, I sang along at the top of my lungs and had a great time. Their harmony, lyrics, and beautiful songwriting touch me every day of my life. I admire their strenghth, activism, and their individuality. They call out to me to be active in my community and to always be myself no matter what the costs.
The Indigo Girls consist of two women, Amy Ray and Emily Saliers. These two women have been friends since high school, but didn't start seriously playing together until college. The Girls write seperately and each have their own distinct style. After they compose their songs, they work together on coming up with the harmonies. The result-pure musical perfection. They write music that is difficult to catagorize, but some call it folk rock.

  Listening to Indigo

Take a listen to this song called "Blood and Fire." This is a classic example of an Amy song. Amy's songs are passionate, tend to be more simple in lyrics and melody, and tend to use more electric guitar and sound more "punky." I think Amy sounds sooo sexy in this song.  This is my favorite song right now because I think it applies to my life.  She sings "I want to find someone who can take as much as I can give, and give it all back without losing the will to live."  Sometimes it's hard to find a person that can take the whole of you and not lose their own identity in the process.

This is an Emily song called "Love's Recovery." I think it is one of her best. Her lyrics amaze me every time I listen to her music. Her songs tend to be more mellow, poetic, and often contain a moral or story. This particular song is about how people are always looking for a better relationship instead of just taking the time to make their current relationship work.  Emily is trying to remind us that the grass may seem greener on the other side, but it's not.  Every relationship has its ups and downs.  "Tell all the friends that think they're so together, they are ghosts and mirages all these thoughts of fairer weather."
The last song you should listen to is called Secure Yourself.  Secure Yourself is a special song to me.  Amy wrote this song whenever her cat died.  My job requires me to euthanize animals that I love all of the time.  I know that all of these animals are special beings, and this song uplifts me when I feel as if I can't handle the pain.  "Secure yourself to heaven, hold on tight the night has come. Fasten up your earthly burdens, you have just begun."  I love you, all you animals that have crossed the rainbow bridge.   You will be in my heart forever.
This is just a sample of a few of my favorites.  They are all from the same album (Indigo Girls), so go out and buy that one and some of the others and support these great artists.  Their music only gets better and more diverse.  Their albums are:  Indigo Girls, Strange Fire, Back on the Bus, Ya'll, Nomads*Indians*Saints, Rites of Passage, Swamp Ophelia, 1200 Curfews, Shaming of the Sun, and Come on Now Social. All of them are great, but I'd recommend starting with Indigo Girls or Swamp Ophelia. Support them please so that they keep making music!

Emily and Amy Quotes
This is what the girls have to say about life, love, their music, and their fans.

Amy says, "Sometimes I like traveling and sometimes I don't.  It's just my cats - I'm worried about my cats. I really am. I think that's the only thing that really bothers me." Emily adds, "We try not to talk about the cats when we're gone."

Why Indigo Girls and not Indigo Women? "It sounds better," said Ray. " 'Women' sounds sort of lofty." She also likes the alliteration. What about Indigo? "We needed a name and went through the dictionary."
-Amy

"We don't say to people that they necessarily have a responsibility to be political, but it shouldn't be so unusual. Music is such a good way to resist. It keeps you strong, it has dignity."
- Amy

"Our fans are very loyal, and they're closely tied into the emotional aspect of our music."
-Emily

"I was jealous of Emily because she was already writing songs and playing guitar. I wasn't writing anything. I was practicing three chords," Ms. Ray says."Yeah, I was writing songs about the sky and the clouds," Ms. Saliers jokes.
- both about their relationship in sixth grade

"My whole thing about writing is I wanna say exactly what .. I want it to be clearly understood what it is I'm saying. And try to say it in unusual way and maybe try to use images that are creative."
- Emily about songwriting

Sometimes I feel like a strawberry.
