Physician Behaviours that Indicate Potential for Sexual Abuse.
(Excerpt from The Preliminary Report of the Task Force on Sexual Abuse of Patients, An Independent Task Force Commissioned by The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. Pg 65)
Based on the experiences reported to the task force, the task force  identified potential warning signs.
  • Doctors initiating sexual talk - preoccupation with sexual talk
  • Praising patients with sexual remarks, ie "You look sexy today" or "You have beautiful eyes".
  • Doctors discussing their personal problems about spouse or partners with patients.
  • Doctors doing therapy in social settings.  For example, over dinner at a restaurant.
  • Doctors offering social drinks before, during and after patients' appointment/examination.
  • Doctors offering to drive patients home an see them in.
  • Doctors giving patients gifts on special occasions.
  • Doctors criticizing patients' partners/spouses.
  • Doctors encouraging patients to visit alone.
  • Doctors discussing patients' likes and dislikes in sexual activity.
  • Doctors stop charging or billing for therapy.
  • Doctors encouraging patients to leave spouses, or else treatment will be terminated.
  • Doctors splitting family by identifying patients as "crazy" and that patients have no credibility.
