Rainbows
I was explaining to my children about how light can be split into all the colors of the rainbow. They said to me "The rainbow has all the colors except black!" I told them that white light is made up of all the colors and how black is really the absence of light. When I went away and thought about that a while, I realized how true that really is. Without light, even the brightest colors can't be seen. On the other hand, even the lightest color, yellow, when there is too much of it (for example, a bottle of yellow ink, or dye) it looks black. In the brightness of God's perfect light, all of our colors shine through best...even the ones we're not so proud of. But even when He shows up our darkest shades, His light is so bright that He and sometimes even we, can see that there are some beautiful things mixed up in there. He can make even our darkest thoughts, motivations, words and actions to do good. We always have hope. Jesus is described as being the light, the life and the way. Even in His human life He shed light everywhere He went. There was never any darkness in Him, He IS the light! Satan is the opposite of that intense, revealing white light. He strives to keep everything black, covered in darkness. He works to convince us that we are not worthy of the light of God, that we don't deserve to have ANY of our good colors shown. At the same time he offers to cover us in darkness so that our own inequities can be less visible, to comfort us and tell us that anything we want to do is OK because it will be done under his cover of darkness. The truth is that God's light reveals all, Good and Bad. The truth is that while we can choose to walk in darkness for a time, without light there can be no life. The trugh is that the darkness, ultimately, hurts far more than the brightest light because the light is from God, it IS God and trying to deny God is, in the end not only a painful but also a futile activity. It is far better for us to let God show us where our dark spots are so that we can bring our brightest colors into His light.
