Chips
on steroids: Bus speed vs Clock speed by
Dean
Well,
it's back for work for me here at my place.
I was
just wondering if it was all about bus speed that made the difference.
While I already saw benchmarks on the web, I tried to convince myself
again and guess write an article about it. I felt this when
I saw m Celeron 433@566 get beaten by a Pentium II 333@500 at some
tests...that's quite to be expected.
Having
2 CopperMines in the same house, I decided to take them both for a
spin.
So these
are the stuff that I used:
Intel
Pentium III 550E@733 (5.5X133)
Intel Pentium III 550E@798
(5.5X145)
Intel Pentium III 600E@800
(6.0X133)
MSI MS 6905 CPU converter
board X2 (not as good as Iwill but excellent product)
Intel FC-PGA stock heatsink
for the Pentium III 600E
Vantec Flip-chip cooler
for the Pentium III 550E (I like the blue!)
Abit BE6-II
128MB PC100 SDRAM
Diamond Viper V770 RIVA
TNT2 Ultra (150/183), Detonator 3.68
So...you
already have an idea of my current system. We'll have to update
the team page later...that is when I get my system all fixed...
Hmm...so
I guess the title was quite right. The TNT2 Ultra and all the
processors were running out of spec. Heheheheheheheheheeh...I
just love that feeling...
For benchmarking,
I used:
SiSoft
Sandra Professional 2000
CPU Benchmark, MMX Benchmark
and Memory Benchmark
Quake
3 Arena
Fastest 640X480
Normal 640X480
High Quality 640X480
3DMark2000
640X480X16, 16-bit textures
640X480X32, 32-bit textures
I decided
to use only 640X480 since this is not a video card comparison and
as much as possible, I'd like to stay away from CPU limitations.
Maybe
I'll make these two tests my standard for benchmarking. I don't
really see the need to run too many tests.
The
competitors...
