The Rev.Samuel Marsden officiated at her wedding. It's presumed Bertha sailed with her husband to Ceylon on board the "Earl Spencer" on 17th January 1814. On board were Maj. George Alexander Gordon; capts. Haddon Smith and John Pike; Lieuts.Archibald McNaughton, Martin Murphy, Philip connor, D'Arcy Wentworth jnr and Bertha's husband Thomas Atkins, ensign Anthony Pook, asst. surgeon George Martin, along with 15 sgts, 5 drummers, 15 corporals, 311 privates, 77 children, and 49 women.The women would have been wives of the men.

Bertha married Lt Thomas Atkins, son of Ringrose Atkins and Elizabeth Baker, on 20 Mar 1813 in St John's Church, Parramatta. (Lt Thomas Atkins was born in 1786 in Mallow, Cork, Ireland and died on 5 Apr 1848 in Port Arthur, Tasmania.)
