BLUE MOON OF KENTUCKY
Written by Bill Monroe

(As performed by Bill Monroe)

Blue moon of Kentucky, keep on shining
Shine on the one that's gone and left me blue
Blue moon of Kentucky, keep on shining
Shine on the one that's gone and left me blue
It was on one moonlight night
Stars shining bright
Whisper on high
Love said goodbye
Blue moon of Kentucky keep on shining
Shine on the one that's gone and left me blue

(As released by Patsy Cline, August 5, 1963)

I said blue moon of Kentucky, keep on a-shinin'
Shine on the one that's gone and left me blue
Blue moon of Kentucky, keep on a-shinin'
Shine on the one that's gone and left me blue

It was on one moonlit night, stars shinin' bright
Whispered on high, love said goodbye

I said blue moon of Kentucky, keep on a-shinin'
Shine on the one that's gone and left me blue

Blue moon of Kentucky, keep on a-shinin'
Shine on the one that's gone and left me blue
Blue moon of Kentucky, keep on a-shinin'
Shine on the one that's gone and left me blue

Well, it was on one moonlit night, stars shinin' bright
Whispered on high, your lover said goodbye
I said blue moon of Kentucky, keep on a-shinin'
Shine on the one that's gone and left me blue
Left me blue
Left me blue
Left me blue

"Back in those days, it seems every trip we made was from Kentucky to Florida driving back and forth. I always thought about Kentucky, and I wanted to write a song about the moon we could always see over it. The best way to do this was to bring a girl into the song. I wanted words to this, because most of my songs were instrumentals. 'Kentucky Waltz' had come earlier and I knew I could write both words and music, so I qrote it in the car on the way home from one of those Florida trips." --Bill Monroe
