Enjoy
a day in rural Hawaii on our Puna Hike & Bike Tour. As we drive
out to the Puna District you'll pass through Pahoa. Noted for it's
"turn of the century" buildings and "laid back"
lifestyle this is the heart of Puna. Beyond Pahoa we'll head for the
coast with a stop at Lava
Tree Park. Here
you will be amazed by the gigantic native foliage and petrified
trees molded by lava.
Our
next stop will be at Pu'u
Kapoho,
home of "Green Lake". This magnificent crater contains one
of only two fresh water lakes in Hawaii. Entertaining steep, heavily
forested, walls on three sides this is one of the most picturesque
places in all of Hawaii. We'll hike around the lake and up to the
rainforest above for a real jungle experience. We'll have lunch in
the crater.
Now
it's time to go for our bike ride. We'll ride down the famous "Red
Road". Along
the way we'll stop for a swim at Ahalanui
Park,
a large tide pool heated by the geothermal forces at work beneath.
Next is a quick stop at Issac Hale Park to watch the local surfers.
Continuing on you will pass through beautiful coastal rain forest.
The bike trip ends at Mackenzie Park where you can walk along the
beautiful sea cliff formations and enjoy the thunder of the crashing waves.
The
trip's not over yet! Leaving Mackenzie Park we'll continue on the
Red Road passing through more jungle, coastal bays and lava fields
ending at Kalapana.
Most of Kalapana was destroyed by a 1983 lava flow and we'll take a
short hike out over the lava field to view the current eruption in
the distance. Then it's back to your point of origin having enjoyed
all the best Puna has to offer. |
